Tips for maximising your time on LinkedIn

WRITTEN BY: Laura Biggs

Building a strong LinkedIn profile is important for your professional brand and can help you connect with potential employers or clients. Here are some tips on how to build your LinkedIn profile with limited time:

  1. Complete your profile: Aim to complete as much of your LinkedIn profile as possible, including your work experience, education, skills, and a professional headshot as this impacts on how many views you will get. This can be done in as little as 30 minutes.
  2. Write a strong headline and summary: Your headline and summary are the first things people see on your profile, so make sure they are clear, concise, and highlight your unique value proposition. Think about who are you predominantly writing for – a potential employer, a recruiter, a client or for your peers – and what keywords they would use to search for you.
  3. Highlight your achievements: In your work experience section, focus on your achievements and measurable results. This will make you stand out from others who simply list their job duties. Don’t list every responsibility, LinkedIn is for highlighting relevant skills and experience rather than documenting everything you have done.
  4. Add relevant skills: Make sure to add relevant skills to your profile. This can help you appear in search results for recruiters and potential employers.

“If you can get better at your job, you should be an active member of LinkedIn, because LinkedIn should be connecting you to the information, insights, and people to be more effective.”
– Reid Hoffman

  1. Engage with others: Engage with other LinkedIn users by commenting on posts, sharing articles, and participating in groups. This can help you expand your network and establish your expertise. Start gently, and as you understand the platform, you will feel more confident commenting and posting.
  2. Ask for recommendations: Ask colleagues, supervisors, or clients for recommendations. This can provide social proof of your skills and achievements. Nothing brings a profile more alive than a recommendation from a Leader , Colleague or Client!

Remember, it’s important to regularly update and maintain your LinkedIn profile. Even with limited time, aim to spend a few minutes each week updating your profile and engaging with others on the platform. Using the LinkedIn app can help you do this easily.
